Dungeons - What, How and Why! Empty Dungeons - What, How and Why!

Hey all. Here is my article for the guild giving you simplified information about Dungeons in Guild Wars 2.

The Basics:
- Dungeons are instanced and can only be entered by parties of 5.
- You access dungeons from persistent world zones and if you disconnect mid way through a dungeon you are sent back to this zone and need to walk through the dungeon portal to return.
- There are a limited number of waypoints in dungeons and some dungeons may just have a waypoint at the start.
- Dungeons have an armour repair kit.
- Dungeons have 4 modes (5 for Arah). These modes are: 1. Storymode and 3 (4 for Arah) Explorable paths.
- Completing the Storymode version of a dungeon unlocks a unique hat as well as money and Karma. You also follow members of Destiny's Edge in Storymode dungeons.
- For explorable modes you choose one path near the start of the dungeon and follow through a series of veteron/champion/legendary bosses while killing mainly veterons and completing small tasks.
- Explorable modes are usually 5 levels higher than their Storymode counterparts.
- Completing explorable paths gives you tokens for that specific dungeon. These tokens can be exchanged in Lion's Arch for Exotic armour and weapons (level 80).
- Completing all the storymode and explorable paths for each dungeon gives you achievement points.
- Completing Storymode gives you a high amount of XP and money. Completing explorable mode gives you a high amount of XP (about 70% of a full XP bar), money and 60 - 20 tokens per run. You get 60 tokens for each path on each character the first time each day and 20 thereafter.
- You can find advertisements for dungeons in map chat (/map) in the zone they are in and often in Lion's Arch.
- You can play in dungeons with people from other servers. Get everyone in a group and then all walk into the portal on your own server.

What and where are the dungeons?

1. Ascalonian Catacombs - Plains of Ashford - Storymode: Lv30 Explorable: Lv35
2. Caudecus's Manor - Queensdale - Storymode: Lv40 Explorable: Lv45
3. Twilight Arbor - Caledon Forest - Storymode: Lv50 Explorable: Lv55
4. Sorrow's Embrace - Dredgehaunt Cliffs - Storymode: Lv60 Explorable: Lv65
5. Citadel of Flame - Fireheart Rise - Storymode: Lv70 Explorable: Lv75
6. Honor of the Wave - Frostgorge Sound - Storymode: Lv76 Explorable: Lv80
7. Crucible of Eternity - Mount Maelstrom - Storymode: Lv78 Explorable: Lv80
8. The Ruined City of Arah - Cursed Shore - Storymode: Lv80 Explorable: Lv80
9. Fractals of the Mists - Lion's Arch (Lv80 - up-scaled)

Advice:

- Make time. Clear between 45 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes for the dungeon runs depending on which dungeon.
- Research what you have to do. Use the bottom link to find out what you will be doing in the dungeon to prepare yourself. Some explorable paths require skilled teamwork and are best explored with organised groups rather than pick up groups.
- Bring money to repair your armour. As is the case with Guild Wars 2 - expect to die at least once. You may live and if so - hurray!
- Take in consumables such as food, potions and sharpening stones to give you extra buffs and keep them applied.
- Always follow the target! Most groups use targets in dungeons and that is for a reason... ignore them at your peril!
- The first time you do a dungeon try and find an experienced group to play with. That way you can relaxing knowing you can follow them in the right places and get used to it rather than screaming for bed and a hot chocolate after 10 minutes as you don't have a scooby what to do or where to go!
- Dungeons have trick paths and dead ends. Only go where you need to.
- If there is an object or monster spawning other monsters - KILL IT FIRST! Very Happy No point in killing everything under the sun for 30 minutes only to realise you could have stopped 25 minutes ago by killing one thing.
- Make sure you are level appropriate to the dungeon you are doing. Do not think: "Oh I'm level 33 so I'll do a level 35 path." Be at least the same higher as the path you are doing.
- Look for red circles on the floors and walls to show you where traps are. The last thing you need is to be impaled/burnt/poisoned/killed when you least expect it.
- Discuss which path you want to do with your team before you go in. Organisation is key!
- Some dungeons can be contested (not available) if the waypoint near them is under attack. Clear the dynamic event at the waypoint to free up the dungeon.

Have I scared you off yet? I hope not as dungeons can be fun and if you persist those tokens make for nice free max armour/damage rewards! Hop in and have a go is my advice. What's the worst that could happen?

Hope that helps!

P.S. If you think you are doing really well - stay on your toes. Sometimes dynamic events happen inside dungeons such as Legendary Trolls bursting through walls or Graveling Burrows spawning Gravelings from the grounds. You get extra XP and money for doing these so it is worth it!
